I am a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and multiple other deployments in the Marine Corps Infantry. One winter evening, I started reading a novel written by a Union Soldier named, Leander Stilwell. The ideas, problems and experiences he wrote about were so close to my own experiences that I knew (from one Infantry Veteran to another) that I needed to share these experiences. Not my own, but his. Or theirs that is. I decided to make it my passion to share the stories of the men (And women) who busted their knees before me.
The days of playing with my Civil War toy soldiers and reenacting the battle of Gettysburg in front of the fireplace with a few Cat attacks are long gone (But not forgotten).
Me – I just said this just now.
I have reminded myself through this experience of building this channel, that whatever I do. The stories that I want to share, are of those who have gone before me in the form of Regimental Histories. Written by these Civil War veterans and the other associated works that are part of the Grand Army Of The Republic. It is my hope that through sharing of these stories that people everywhere can reconnect with these voices of the past and at the same time, push back on some of the lies that have arisen out of things like the Lost Cause Myth.
Half the time, the stories that these men tell are straight out of my own experiences. I do hope that other Veterans find comfort in these works as much as I do in that the experiences and PTSD we may carry, was also carried and dealt with by the generations before us. I often think back to the Roman Legionnaire and his time of service. What I would do for a memoir written by one of them, instead of a General.
As a big fan of podcast myself (Including other Civil War podcasts) I wanted to do things differently from others. That is why my podcast is divided in two. The first half of a podcast episode is the actual content of each regimental history, book or source being read verbatim. Then afterwards, I ramble on about some things I found interesting from the reading. So you can dip out if you are not interested. This is my first season podcasting, so quality may differ but I’m learning quickly and it gets better every month.
